Ventura Craft Beer History: How One Local Bar Helped Start It All

Most guides to Ventura's craft beer scene focus on the breweries you can visit today. But the real ventura craft beer history starts decades earlier, with a local bar that took a chance on independent brewers long before craft beer became mainstream.

A Local Bar With 41 Reasons to Visit

In 1997, J.R. Ford opened the Winchester Grill in Ventura. While Ford wasn't a brewer himself, what he built became a turning point in local ventura craft beer history: a bar featuring 41 draft beer handles — the largest selection between Los Angeles and San Francisco at the time.

For context, most bars in the late 1990s poured a handful of mainstream domestic beers. Forty-one handles, many of them independent and regional, was practically unheard of.

Ventura Craft Beer History's First Independent Pours

Winchester Grill didn't just offer variety — it offered access. It was the first establishment in Ventura County to carry beers from Firestone, Surf Brewing, and Topa Topa outside of the breweries' own taprooms. At a time when finding these beers anywhere else in the county meant driving straight to the source, Winchester Grill brought them to a single bar in Downtown Ventura.

In other words: they were supporting craft beer before it was cool.

Why This Matters for Ventura's Brewery Scene Today

The breweries that make up Downtown Ventura's walkable scene today — places like Topa Topa, MadeWest, and Ventura Coast Brewing Co. — exist within a local beer culture that didn't happen by accident. Establishments willing to champion independent brewers early on helped create the demand and appreciation that local breweries could later build on.

If you want to see how that scene has evolved, our guide to Ventura's craft breweries covers the spots shaping the city's beer culture today.

From One Bar to a Walkable Brewery Scene

This piece of ventura craft beer history is also where Ventura Brew Tours draws its own inspiration. The idea behind our guided walking tours — introducing people to local craft beer through conversation, discovery, and good company — echoes exactly what Winchester Grill was doing back in 1997: making craft beer accessible, approachable, and worth talking about.

You can read more about how that connects to our tours on our About Us page.
